VIKINGS SPLIT SATURDAY AT SPRING FLING IN CORVALLIS, OR

 

CORVALLIS, Ore.Portland State split a pair of games Saturday at the Spring Fling, falling 6-4 to Oregon State before beating Idaho State 9-5 at the OSU Softball Complex. The Vikings (15-17) have now won six of their last seven games.

 

Senior right-hander Mandy Hill (8-10) took the loss against the Beavers (21-13). Against the Bengals (1-17), senior right-hander Meghan Gendron (2-0) worked four innings of relief to earn the win, and Portland State received home runs from junior left fielder Jenna Wilson, junior center fielder Jackie Heide and freshman shortstop Arielle Wiser.

 

The Vikings will be off Sunday before completing the Spring Fling with games Monday and Tuesday at Erv Lind Stadium. Portland State will face UC Davis Monday at 11:00 a.m., and host Oregon State Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.

 

GAME 1: OREGON STATE 6, PORTLAND STATE 4

Junior first baseman Deann Young and freshman catcher Audrey Roderfeld both homered to lead Oregon State to a 6-4 win over Portland State. Young hit a three-run home run in the first inning to give the Beavers a 3-0 lead. Roderfeld then hit a two-run blast to cap a three-run third inning and extend the Beavers’ lead to 6-0.

 

The home run was the third of the year for Young, and the fifth of the season for Roderfeld.

 

The loss snapped the Vikings’ season-best five-game win streak.

 

Portland State plated a run in the fourth and fifth, and two in the sixth. Sophomore third baseman De’Chauna Skinner and junior first baseman Jana Rae Slayton had RBI singles, and junior second baseman Jamee Rauch had a two-out, two-run double in the sixth to pull the Vikings to within 6-4.

 

Sophomore right-hander Kelly Dyer (12-9) allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits and six walks, while striking out seven in going the distance to earn the decision.

 

Hill was charged with six runs on eight hits and three walks, while striking out four in six innings of work.

 

Young finished 2-for-2 with four RBI, as she also had a RBI single in the third inning to make it 4-0. Freshman left fielder McKenna Lowe went 2-for-3.

 

Rauch finished 2-for-3 to lead Portland State at the plate.

 

GAME 2: PORTLAND STATE 9, IDAHO STATE 5

Portland State scored five runs in the first inning and then held on for a 9-5 win over Idaho State in the Vikings’ second game on Saturday.

 

The Bengals brought the tying run to the plate in seventh inning, loading the bases with two outs. However, freshman right-hander Nichole Latham struck out junior second baseman Krista Armstrong to end the game.

 

Gendron allowed one unearned run on three hits and struck out two over four innings to earn the win in relief.

 

Latham pitched two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out three, to earn her first save.

 

Portland State scored five runs on four hits in the first inning. Heide had an RBI single to score Rauch, who reached on a lead-off walk, to plate the game’s first run. Hill then scored Heide on a RBI double, and Jenna Wilson capped the inning with a three-run home run. The home run was the first of her career.

 

After Idaho State answered with a run in the bottom of the first inning, Heide hit her third home run of the season, a two-out solo shot in the second to make it 6-1.

 

The Bengals responded with three runs in the bottom of the second, highlighted by a two-run single by sophomore center fielder Megan Miller, to pull within 6-4.

 

Both teams would plate a run in the fourth inning, and the Vikings added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Wiser led-off the inning with her first career home run to extend the Vikings’ lead to 8-5.

 

Miller and junior first baseman Heather Dixon both went 2-for-4 with two RBI for Idaho State. The Bengals had five players record two hits each as Idaho State out-hit Portland State 12-9.

 

Heide, junior first baseman Jana Rae Slayton and Wilson all had two hits each for the Vikings.

 

Freshman right-hander Natasha Milosevich allowed nine runs on nine hits and six walks, while striking out three, in 6 1/3 innings in being charged with the loss.

       

COLORADO STATE 6, SAINT MARY’S 1

HONOLULU, Hawai’i -- Colorado State built a 4-0 lead after three innings to defeat Saint Mary’s 6-1 in the Gaels’ final game at the Bank of Hawai’i Invitational Saturday. The Rams scored a run in the first and second, and two in the third. Colorado State later added two insurance runs in the sixth. Saint Mary’s finished the Bank of Hawai’i Invitational with a 2-4 record.
