NEVADA 7, PORTLAND ST. 3

SEATTLEFreshman shortstop Danielle Patrick went 2-for-3 with two RBI, and sophomore right-hander Katie Holverson struck out eight to lead Nevada to a 7-3 win over Portland State at the Husky Softball Classic Saturday morning. The loss was the second straight for the Vikings (6-11), while the Wolfpack (11-5) has now won seven of its last nine.

Patrick had an RBI double to give Nevada a 2-0 lead in the second, and later had an RBI single in the fourth to make it 4-0.

Holverson (4-3) worked five scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk, to earn the win.

Senior right-hander Mandy Hill (4-7) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits and two walks, while striking out five in five innings.

Junior second baseman Kim Silagyi also went 2-for-2 with two runs scored for the Wolfpack. Junior left fielder Brittany Puzey hit her second home run of the year in the third inning, a one-out solo shot to make it 3-0.

Junior third baseman Jamee Rauch went 2-for-3 and had a two-out RBI single in the seventh to plate the Vikings’ first run of the game. Freshman shortstop Arielle Wiser followed Rauch with a two-run single to extend her hitting streak to six games.

Leading 4-0, Nevada scored three runs in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach.

Portland State will conclude the Husky Softball Classic on Sunday. The Vikings will meet the Wolfpack again at 9:00 a.m. Following the Nevada-Washington contest scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Portland State and Washington will conclude its suspended game from Friday and then play a regularly-scheduled seven-inning game. The Huskies led the Vikings 4-0 in the bottom of the second inning Friday before being suspended due to rain.

NOTES: Wiser’s six-game hit streak is the longest by a Viking player this season … Saturday’s meeting was the first between the Vikings and Wolfpack since a 2-1 Portland State win during an elimination game at the 2006 NCAA Corvallis Regional … Hill’s start moved her into second place on the Portland State career list for appearances with 118 … The school career record is 133 set by Morgan Seibert (2000-2003).

SACRAMENTO STATE 5, NORTH DAKOTA STATE 1

HAYWARD, Calif. -- Sacramento State junior Kayla Meeks had a two-run single and allowed just one run and six hits over seven innings to lead the Hornets to a 5-1 victory over North Dakota State in the third round of the Bronco Softball Stampede Saturday morning at the Oliver Sports Complex.

With the victory, the Hornets improved to 3-0 at the three-day, five-game tournament, and 8-5 overall this season. The Hornets have won four straight and seven of their last nine games. The team returns later today to face Providence at 2 p.m., and concludes the tournament Sunday morning against Boston College at 10 a.m. Sacramento State knocked off both Youngstown State and Boston College to open the tourney yesterday.

With the loss, North Dakota State, which had won four of its last five prior to today, dropped to 12-4 this season and 2-1 at the tournament.

Sacramento State scored all five of its runs in the first inning as the team sent nine batters to the plate and pounded out six hits. Whitney Loomis started the scoring by doubling home Amy Tompkins, who led off the inning with a single. After Jamie Schloredt was retired, Izmena Cabrera followed with an RBI-single scoring Loomis. After a walk to Rachel Miles and infield single by Sherry Clark loaded the bases, Meeks came through with a two-run single scoring both Miles and Cabrera. Clark’s infield single was hit so sharply, it broke North Dakota State third baseman’s Jackie Currie’s hand.

Teri Ann Caoagan rounded out the scoring by singling home Meeks later in the inning for the team’s fifth run. Sacramento State continues to impress in the opening stages of games this year, as the team has now outscored its opposition, 29-8, during the first two innings.

Meeks (4-3) picked up her second straight victory, allowing just six hits and striking out four while tossing her sixth complete game of the season. She allowed just one extra-base hit during the entire contest, and over her last two starts, has allowed just eight hits and one run over 12.0 innings.

Allison Bakke (9-4) got the loss for North Dakota State, allowing five runs and six hits before being pulled after two innings. The Bison got their only run of the game in the sixth inning when Melissa Chmielewski singled home Nicole Rivera.

Tompkins, Loomis, Cabrera, Clark, Meeks and Caoagan all had hits for the Hornets, while Clark finished 2-for-3.

SACRAMENTO STATE 8, PROVIDENCE 0

HAYWARD, Calif. – Junior Izmena Cabrera had two hits and a team-best four RBIs to lead Sacramento State to an 8-0 victory over Providence in the fourth round of the Bronco Softball Stampede Saturday afternoon at the Oliver Sports Complex.

With the victory, Sacramento State improved to 4-0 at the tournament and 9-5 overall this season. None of the four Hornet games during the three-day, five-game tournament have been close, as Sacramento State has combined to outscore its opposition, 35-4. That includes victories over Youngstown State (8-0), Boston College (14-3), North Dakota State (5-1) and Providence (8-0). Sacramento State wraps up the tournament tomorrow morning against Boston College at 10 a.m.

This afternoon, Hornet pitchers Megan Schaefer and Brittani Clifford combined to allow no runs and just four hits with six strikeouts. Schaefer (1-1) got the win, going the first four innings, allowing four hits. Clifford picked up her second save of the season, allowing just two walks and no hits over three innings.

Cabrera got the Hornets on the board in the first inning, with a two-run homer that cleared the right field wall. The home run was her third of the season for the transfer from the College of Charleston. Sacramento State added one more in third on Whitney Loomis’ team-high tying fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to right-center.

After tacking on one more run in the sixth (Amanda Meyer RBI-single), the Hornets blew things open with a four-run seventh inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Cabrera and an RBI-double from Meyer.

The Hornets had 12 hits in the game, including two each from Cabrera, Sherry Clark and Meyer.

Jennifer Maccio (1-3) got the loss for Providence, allowing 12 hits and eight runs (five earned) in 6.2 innings.

LOYOLA MARYMOUNT 4, UC RIVERSIDE 1

LOYOLA MARYMOUNT 7, BINGHAMTOM 0

EL PASO, Texas - LMU returned to its winning ways, sweeping both games on the second day of play at the UTEP Tournament in El Paso, TX. Junior MiaSarah Cesena drove in three runs to help the Lions beat UC Riverside 4-1 in game one and they followed with a 7-0 victory over Binghamton.

Mired in a three-game losing streak, their longest of the season, the Lions jumped out with three runs in the second inning. Sophomore Darcy Pagnini led off with a double and was sacrificed to third. After a walk to junior Megan Ackerman, Cesena brought them both home with a double to left-center. Junior Kirsten Slouber followed with a single to right to make it 3-0.

UCR came back with a run in the third but it could have been more as senior Tiffany Pagano worked her way out of a bases loaded jam. Two walks and a bunt single loaded the bases with one out, with Kristie Martinez putting the Highlanders on the board. Pagano was able to keep the damage to one run by retiring the next two batters.

Cesena came through again in the fourth, delivering a two-out single that plated sophomore Christine Foley, who had singled earlier in the inning.

Pagano (6-2) was equal parts brilliant and wild, striking out 10 but walking eight. She gave up the one run and only four hits. Cesena, Foley, Slouber, and Pagnini had all of LMU’s hits, collecting two apiece. Junior Chelsie Tysdal saw her hitting streak come to an end at ten as she was held hitless in four at-bats.

In game two, the Lions scored twice in the second and five times in the fifth, taking advantage of shaky Binghamton defense. In the second, Foley reached on a throwing error by the shortstop with one out. Two batters later, freshman Priscilla Satete singled to keep the inning alive for sophomore J.J. Hartung, who came through with a two-out triple to left-center.

That was all the support sophomore Melissa Dykema (5-4) would need as she allowed four hits, two each in the fourth and sixth, and struck out 11. She struck out the side in the third and fifth.

For good measure, the Lions broke the game open with five runs in the fifth. The first six batters all reached safely with run-scoring singles by Tysdal and Foley. Cesena drove in her fourth and fifth runs of the day with a two-run double.

Seven different Lions had hits on the evening. Hartung and Cesena each drove in two runs while Satete and Ackerman crossed the plate twice.

The Lions will play Georgetown on Sunday before returning home for the next 21 games. They get things underway on Tuesday, hosting Loyola of Chicago for a noon doubleheader.
