GAME 1- PORTLAND STATE 9, SOUTHERN UTAH 0 (6 INNINGS)
GAME 2- PORTLAND STATE 10, UNLV 9

LAS VEGAS – Brandi Scoggins went 8-for-8 and Portland State racked up 27 hits in victories over Southern Utah and UNLV on Friday at the Eller Media Stadium Tournament.

Portland State totaled 13 hits on its way to a 9-0 victory in six innings over Southern Utah in their first game. They then matched their season-high with 14 hits in a 10-9 win over the host Rebels.

Scoggins went 4-for-4, doubled twice and drove in three runs, and freshman pitcher Anna Bertrand scattered three hits over five innings of work in the win over Southern Utah.

The Vikings led 3-0 after three innings. Sadie Lopez got them on the board first with an RBI-single to right field in the second. In the third inning, Arielle Wiser doubled home Brandi Campos, before Scoggins plated Wiser with a double to the left center field gap.

Portland State then exploded for six runs on five hits in the sixth inning.

After Alexa Morales reached base on a throwing error to lead off the inning, the Vikings got three straight singles by Carly McEachran, Campos and Wiser that scored the first run. Danielle Lynn then launched a shot over the right field fence that appeared to be a grand slam, but the ball curved right of the foul pole by a few feet. It didn't matter, though, as she brought in two runs on the next pitch with a single through the right side.

Two batters later, Scoggins hit another double to left center to drive in a pair of runners and make it 8-0. De'Chauna Skinner closed out the scoring with a sacrifice fly that plated Scoggins.

While the Vikings were finding their groove at the plate, Bertrand was shutting down the Thunderbirds with a mix of over-powering fastballs and effective changeups. She notched nine strikeouts, to match her career-high, and sat Southern Utah down in order in the first, second and fifth innings. She also didn't walk a batter for the first time this year.

Bubba Kearns (1-5) gave up all 13 hits and nine runs in 5 1/3 innings to suffer the loss for Southern Utah. Eight of the runs were earned.

Wiser and Campos each had two hits for the Vikings.

Portland State's offense continued to stay hot against UNLV, as the Vikings jumped out to a 7-0 lead through two innings.

Already up 1-0, the Vikings scored six runs in the second, getting RBI-singles from Campos, Wiser and Scoggins. Diede delivered the big blow with a bases-clearing double down the left field line.

What appeared to be a Viking blowout quickly turned into a close contest when the Rebels scored three runs in the third and three more in the fourth. Trailing 7-3, UNLV got within one in the fourth inning on a three-run homer to dead center off the bat of Marissa Nichols.

UNLV (9-7) then tied it up in the bottom half of the fifth on an RBI-triple by Laura Briones.

PSU responded quickly, though, going back up 10-7 with three runs in the sixth. Lynn doubled home two runs and Scoggins drove her home with her fourth single of the contest.

Yet again, the Rebels came back, scoring two runs in their half on a two-run opposite field blast by left-handed hitter Jaci Hull.

In the bottom of the seventh, UNLV got its leadoff runner on, but Bertrand, who came on in relief in the fifth, finished the game with back-to-back strikeouts to preserve the win.

Scoggins once again led PSU, going 4-for-4 with two RBIs, while Campos, Diede and Lynn each had two hits. Both of Diede's hits were doubles.

Bertrand got the win in relief to improve to 4-2. She allowed two hits and two earned runs in 2 2/3 innings of work.

Relief pitcher Traci Odegard (4-2) took the loss for UNLV. The junior lefty surrendered four runs on seven hits.

Hull led UNLV by going 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Ashli Holland went 2-for-3. The Rebels finished with 11 hits off of three Portland State pitchers.

"We had a great day at the plate," said PSU Head Coach Tobin Echo-Hawk. "We had a couple of people break out. Obviously, Brandi Scoggins had a huge day, and other people had timely hits for us when we needed them. In the past we've had runners on but haven't gotten that timely hit. Today we did."

The Vikings play twice again tomorrow. They start with a 9 a.m. contest against No. 13 California, and then play UNLV again at 11:15 a.m. Both games can be heard on GoViks.com.

NOTES: Scoggins raised her batting average by 149 points to .349. She now has 33 doubles at PSU, leaving her seven shy of the Vikings career record ... Over their past four games, the Vikings have 43 hits, 31 runs and 12 doubles. That is after tallying 46 hits, 18 runs and five doubles over their first 10 contests. They also have four double-digit hit performances over their last six games ... Southern Utah fell to 1-11 on the year.

CS BAKERSFIELD 8, SAINT MARY’S 3

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The flood of doubles continued for the CSUB softball team as the Roadrunners opened the 2010 Matador Invitational with an 8-3 victory over fellow Pacific Coast Softball Conference member Saint Mary’s College at Cal State Northridge.

The nonconference win was CSUBís (6-8 overall) fourth in a row. Saint Maryís falls to 5-5 with the loss.

After bagging a school-record six doubles in its last game versus Utah Valley, CSUB added four doubles Friday as part of its 13-hit attack. Kelli Bailey doubled twice in the fifth multi-double game of her career to help the Roadrunners jump out to a 5-1 lead after two innings.

That proved to be all the support sophomore pitcher Sammy Rodriguez would need. Rodriguez fanned a career-high eight Gaels and allowed just four hits to earn her fourth win of the season.

The first four ‘Runners to come to bat got hits. RBI singles by Bailey and Ryane Petersen opened the scoring before bases-loaded walks to Rodriguez and Jaimey Kleinsmith capped the four-run first inning.

Saint Mary’s scored on the lone CSUB error of the morning to pull one back in the bottom of the first before Bailey’s RBI double to deep center restored the four-run lead. An RBI single by Danielle Lyman highlighted a two-run fourth that essentially put the game on ice.

The teams traded homeruns over the final three innings. Senior second baseman Kristin Archuleta hit her first of the season for CSUB. Catcher Jenna Smith and centerfielder Michelle Mounts added solo shots for Saint Maryís.

Bailey’s two doubles were part of a 3-for-4 day for the senior third baseman. Archuleta and Petersen each went 2-for-4 with Archuleta adding three RBIs.

Rebecca Sabatini and Katherine Delpit had the other two hits for Saint Mary’s.

CSUB and Saint Mary’s continue play at the Matador Invitational Saturday. Saint Mary’s kicks the day off against Iowa at 9 a.m. CSUB plays Iowa at 11 a.m. and PCSC foe Santa Clara at 1 p.m.
