PORTLAND – Portland State freshman pitcher Anna Bertrand has been selected as a finalist for the 2009 Johnny Carpenter Prep Athlete of the Year Award. The winner will be announced at the Oregon Sports Awards on Jan. 31 at the Nike World Campus.
Bertrand is in her first year on the Park Blocks after a stellar prep career at McMinnville High School. This fall, during the Vikings' preseason schedule, Bertrand pitched Portland State to a 1-0 win at Oregon.
Down the road at Mac High, Bertrand was honored as the Oregon class 6A Pitcher of the Year last spring. She was also chosen as the Gatorade Oregon Player of the Year. A three-time first team all-state pick and four-time Pacific Conference Pitcher of the Year, Bertrand went 22-3 with four no-hitters as a senior. She struck out 268 in 176 innings while leading the Grizzlies to the state semifinals. At the plate, Bertrand hit .462 with five home runs, 30 RBI and a .789 slugging percentage.
Betrand also excelled in the classroom, posting a 4.0 grade-point average on her way to being named a National Merit Scholar finalist.
The Oregon Sports Awards honors the state’s top athletes, coaches and teams of the past year. A statewide media panel votes on the awards. Emmy award-winning sportscaster Ahmad Rashad will be the master of ceremonies, and numerous sports celebrities will present the awards. The show is also televised by Comcast SportsNet and will be aired at various times around the state as well.
